Five Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Climate change is the single biggest threat to our entire planet - but that doesn’t mean it is irreversible. While the biggest culprits continue to be large corporations and national governments contributing to the degradation of our Earth, we as citizens can still play our part to help save the planet.

Your carbon footprint is a measure of the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that our lifestyle produces. Everything we do - from driving to work to shopping for groceries - is contributing to the amount of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere.

Here are five ways you can reduce your carbon footprint:

  • Use green power
    • Switch your energy source for your home to green energy, such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric energy. You could also install solar panels if you live in an area conducive to solar panels.

  • Eat less meat
    • The more meat you buy, the larger your carbon footprint. The meat industry is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, as meat production emits 20 times more greenhouse gas emissions than beans or lentils. Even if you are not willing to go vegetarian or vegan, try doing Meatless Mondays or attempting to eat one plant-based meal a day!

  • Use less water
    • A simple, yet easily forgettable way to reduce your carbon footprint is to use less water. Turn off your shower in between washing your hair and body, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, and try to only use the amount of water for cooking that you need.

  • Carpool, carpool, carpool
    • Whether you are a student or a working adult, carpooling can significantly cut your carbon footprint down, as individuals are emitting less greenhouse gases from sharing a transportation method. You can also try biking if you live in a city or taking public transportation. It may feel inconvenient, but in the long run, it can save you money and save the environment.

  • Eliminate single-use plastics
    • Single-use plastics require a great deal of energy and water to produce, making them a large contributor of greenhouse gases. Try using a reusable water bottle, cotton tote bag, and reusable cutlery next time you leave the house.
